Romans 6:6 Commentary

ROMANS 6:6 COMMENTARY

A proper Romans 6:6 Commentary needs to take into account the preceding verses from Romans 5 and 6:

For if by one man’s offence death reigned by one; much more they which receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness shall reign in life by one, Jesus Christ.

Therefore as by the offence of one judgment came upon all men to condemnation; even so by the righteousness of one the free gift came upon all men unto justification of life.

For as by one man’s disobedience many were made sinners, so by the obedience of one shall
many be made righteous.

Moreover the law entered, that the offence might abound. But where sin abounded, grace did much more abound:

That as sin hath reigned unto death, even so might grace reign through righteousness unto eternal life by Jesus Christ our Lord.

What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound?

Certainly not! How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein?

Romans 5:17-6:2

God sent the Law into the world for the purpose of showing people that they are sinners. When sin increased, grace increased even more through the gift of righteousness for those that believed in Christ [Romans 5:20].

When you believed in the Gospel of Christ you were given ‘the gift of righteousness’ and God declared you to be righteous [Romans 1:16-17, 5:1, 5:17].

Paul says that it is not possible for you to remain in sin anymore because you died to sin through a spiritual baptism into Christ [Romans 6:2, 1 Corinthians 12: 13, Galatians 3: 26-28].

Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death?

Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.

For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection:

Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin.

Romans 6:3-6

When you were baptised into Christ, your spirit died with Christ to the world and was then raised with Christ in newness of life [Colossians 2:12, 3:3].

When your spirit died with Christ, your spirit died to your sinful flesh [Galatians 5: 24], including the sin in your sinful flesh. This is spiritual circumcision [Colossians 2: 11-12].

Since you died to the sin in your sinful flesh, it is not you anymore. Therefore any acts of sin done in your sinful flesh do not get accredited to your account.

So as a Christian, you can’t add any extra sin to your account, and effectively your body of sin has been destroyed [Romans 6:6].

Therefore, your righteousness from God is sealed through spiritual circumcision [Romans 4:4, 4:23-25], and you stay permanently righteous before God [Romans 5:1].
