Relating to God (Part 1): Prayer

WHAT IS PRAYER?

Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you.

James 4:8a

And it came to pass at that time, when Eli was laid down in his place, and his eyes began to wax dim, that he could not see;
And ere the lamp of God went out in the temple of the LORD, where the ark of God was, and Samuel was laid down to sleep;
That the LORD called Samuel: and he answered,
‘Here am I.’
And he ran unto Eli, and said,
‘Here am I; for thou calledst me.’
And he said,
‘I called not; lie down again.’
And he went and laid down.
And the LORD called yet again,
‘Samuel.’
And Samuel arose and went to Eli, and said,
‘Here am I; for thou didst call me.’
And he answered,
‘I called not, my son; lie down again.’
Now Samuel did not yet know the LORD, neither was the word of the LORD yet revealed unto him.
And the LORD called Samuel again the third time. And he arose and went to Eli, and said,
‘Here am I; for thou didst call me.’
And Eli perceived that the LORD had called the child.
Therefore Eli said unto Samuel,
‘Go, lie down: and it shall be, if he call thee, that thou shalt say, ‘Speak, LORD; for thy servant heareth’. So Samuel went and laid down in his place.
And the LORD came, and stood, and called as at other times,
‘Samuel, Samuel.’
Then Samuel answered,
‘Speak; for thy servant heareth.’

1 Samuel 3:2-10

When you believed the Gospel, you were baptised into Christ [1 Corinthians 15:3-4, Galatians 3:26-27].

A spiritual union was set up between you and Christ [1 Corinthians 6:17].

Since your spirit is in Christ and you are therefore plugged into God, He can freely speak to your spirit & you can freely listen.

The spiritual union that you have with Christ [1 Corinthians 1:30] is a marriage union, so your spirit submits to Christ [Ephesians 5:22-24].

Consequently, your spirit submits to God and therefore wants to relate to God [Romans 1:9, Philippians 3:3].

Prayer is relating to God.

Listening to God is part of prayer [1 Thessalonians 5:17].

God will always respond to your prayers [James 4:8a, Luke 11:9-13].

God speaks for the purpose of you responding [1 Samuel 3:2-10].

The best prayer a Christian can pray is saying to God that you want His will for your life [Luke 11:2].

The purpose of you saying you want God’s will for your life, is that God will respond to that prayer and this will make your walk with God easier.
