The Meaning of Romans 1 to 5 & 10: The Gospel of Christ

WHAT IS THE GOSPEL?

Paul, a servant of Jesus Christ, called to be an apostle, separated unto the gospel of God,

(Which he had promised afore by his prophets in the holy scriptures,)

Concerning his Son Jesus Christ our Lord, which was made of the seed of David according to the flesh;

And declared to be the Son of God with power, according to the spirit of holiness, by the resurrection from the dead:

By whom we have received grace and apostleship, for obedience to the faith among all nations, for his name:

Among whom are ye also the called of Jesus Christ:

To all that be in Rome, beloved of God, called to be saints: Grace to you and peace from God our Father, and the Lord Jesus Christ.

Romans 1:1-7

God testified to the world that Jesus was the Son of God, by raising Him from the dead [Romans 1:4].

Paul, a servant of Jesus Christ, called to be an apostle, separated unto the gospel of God,

(Which he had promised afore by his prophets in the holy scriptures,)

Concerning his Son Jesus Christ our Lord, which was made of the seed of David according to the flesh;

The Gospel is the power of God unto salvation, for them that believe [Romans 1:16-17].

The Gospel of Christ is that Christ died for sin and was raised from the dead [1 Corinthians 15:3-4].

Therefore thou art inexcusable, O man, whosoever thou art that judgest: for wherein thou judgest another, thou condemnest thyself; for thou that judgest doest the same things.

But we are sure that the judgment of God is according to truth against them which commit such things.

And thinkest thou this, O man, that judgest them which do such things, and doest the same, that thou shalt escape the judgment of God?

Or despisest thou the riches of his goodness and forbearance and longsuffering; not knowing that the goodness of God leadeth thee to repentance?

But after thy hardness and impenitent heart treasurest up unto thyself wrath against the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God;

Who will render to every man according to his deeds:

To them who by patient continuance in well doing seek for glory and honour and immortality, eternal life:

But unto them that are contentious, and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, indignation and wrath,

Tribulation and anguish, upon every soul of man that doeth evil, of the Jew first, and also of the Gentile;

But glory, honour, and peace, to every man that worketh good, to the Jew first, and also to the Gentile:

For there is no respect of persons with God.

Romans 2:1-11

Every person has sinned before God [Romans 2:1].

Every person has stored up God’s anger/wrath towards them for their sin [Romans 2:5].

If a person does not get their sin forgiven, when they die they will experience the wrath of God for their sin [Romans 2:5-9].

If a person does not get their sin forgiven, when they die they will suffer tribulation and anguish [Romans 2:9].

As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one:

There is none that understandeth, there is none that seeketh after God.

They are all gone out of the way, they are together become unprofitable; there is none that doeth good, no, not one.

Their throat is an open sepulchre; with their tongues they have used deceit; the poison of asps is under their lips:

Whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness:

Their feet are swift to shed blood:

Destruction and misery are in their ways:

And the way of peace have they not known:

There is no fear of God before their eyes.

Now we know that what things soever the law saith, it saith to them who are under the law: that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God.

Romans 3:10-19

Every person has sinned before God [Romans 3:10-19].

But now the righteousness of God without the law is manifested, being witnessed by the law and the prophets;

Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference:

For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;

Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus:

Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God;

To declare, I say, at this time his righteousness: that he might be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus.

Where is boasting then? It is excluded. By what law? of works? Nay: but by the law of faith.

Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith without the deeds of the law.

Romans 3:21-28

When you believed the Gospel of Christ, you received the gift of the ‘righteousness of God’ and consequently God declared you to be ‘Righteous’ [Romans 3:22-24, 26].

When you believed the Gospel, Christ Jesus became a propitiation to you [Romans 3:25].

A propitiation is a sacrifice which appeases the wrath of God.

So when you believed the Gospel, Jesus became your personal substitute regarding your sin. God accepted this sacrifice as payment for your sin. This is how your sin was forgiven.

Therefore, when you believed the Gospel, you escaped the wrath of God which was due to you for your sin [Romans 5:9].

What shall we say then that Abraham our father, as pertaining to the flesh, hath found?

For if Abraham were justified by works, he hath whereof to glory; but not before God.

For what saith the scripture? Abraham believed God, and it was counted unto him for righteousness.

Now to him that worketh is the reward not reckoned of grace, but of debt.

But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness.

Romans 4:1-5

When you believed the Gospel, you received the righteousness of God, because it was imputed (counted) to your account through faith in Christ [Romans 4:5].

God declared you to be righteous (justified), whilst you were ungodly, which means that you were not justified because of any good works [Romans 3:28, 4:5].

For when we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly.

For scarcely for a righteous man will one die: yet peradventure for a good man some would even dare to die.

But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.

Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him.

Romans 5:6-9

Christ died for you whilst you were ungodly, because of God’s love for you [Romans 5:6-8].
